Just some silly technical remarks...

Well, kids, my iPhoto4 crashed again. It left behind neatly organized folders of doubled and trippled images, neatly organized by imaginary dates. I went through the rebuilding process of the database once before, it was a tough one, I ended up finding that many of the images I was suddenly awarded were indeed a mere 0×0 pixels in size.
Extensis Portfolio was another software I had purchased. Here the attempt to upgrade brought me to a page that did not exist…
iView looks like a really beautiful solution. There seems to be some tiny thing not quite going my way as it seems. I just deleted some of the images that were clearly and very obviously marked as doubles, just to discover that they have taken their originals with them into their virtual grave. I basically just deleted about 100 images or so, thinking that I was deleting some redundant data… oh and the catalogues I had created are now considered “hidden,” any attempt to make them “visible” just shows me some completely different collection.
I shall probably just wait and see what happens next… will all of my right socks disappear? Will all of my shits come back from the wash sporting a single sleeve? Will there be no more uptown train service? Will the sun just set and never rise again?
I will need some rest, I think… let me not delete or organize for a little while… I am going to backup and not write, just watch… hmm…

Oh Witold! I most certainly HOPE that not all your "shits" come back from the wash sporting a single sleeve or anything else for that matter! I think you need to start washing your clothes in a washing machine, NOT the lavatory. Just a friendly suggestion :) Perhaps you are being held captive in a parallel universe and once you escape, all your long lost images will return and all your "shits" will disappear for good? Let's hope so!

Witold, feel free to contact me in regards to any problems you might be having with iView. It's possible to perform file operations with iView (such as moving them to different locations or the trash, etc.), but iView's pretty safe--i.e. if the database crashes (which I've never had happen), it doesn't take your files along for the ride. Also, your files would have been moved to the trash--unless you emptied the trash, your files should still be there.

There's a "show duplicates" command which you can use to select duplicates easily.

Anyway, you have my contact information if you need it. Good luck.

haha, Stephan!, I really wrote Shits instead if shirts.... haha... such a silly typo...

Resonance, the good thing is that all of the images I deleted yesterday were images of older scans... which are not only backed up in some other databases but on CDs and acually even on film... (so it could really be worse...) : )
It is all good... yesterday's event made me:
1) fire up that printer of mine again... (resonance, you made me do it.)
2) reconnect my good back up drive...
3) go to sleep early...
i think three out of the three are really good...
I should just be more careful as to what I write here...
: )

Ah, film backup. I'm presently going through some very scratched negatives one by one.

I had a computer graphics professor in college who was famous for the following quote:

"hardcopy is the last refuge for fools"

Fools you and I are, Witold. A whole generation of digital-only photographers will have no such refuge when the iPhoto monster eats their memories.
